Benedictine Sisters
Four Benedictine Sisters celebrated their many years of service at the Queen of Angels Monastery in Mt. Angel on Feb. 10. Sr. Corinne Clay, seated, marks 70 years with the Sisters; Sr. Mechtilde Fennimore, standing left, celebrates 60 years; Sr. Agatha Meissner, standing middle, celebrates 70 years; and Sr. Rocio Moreno Soto has served for 25 years.
Benedictine Sisters celebrate milestones
Four Benedictine Sisters recently celebrated Jubilees at Queen of Angels Monastery.
Sr. Corinne Clay and Sr. Agatha Meissner marked 70 years as Benedictines, Sr. Mechtilde Fennimore celebrated her 60th jubilee and Sr. Rocino Moreno Soto celebrated 25 years.
The Jubilee Celebration was held during community Eucharist on Feb. 10, which is the Feast of St. Scholastica, twin sister of St. Benedict and a noted Benedictine saint in her own right.
Clay was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and grew up in Southern Oregon. While studying to be a nurse in Medford, she met two Benedictine Sisters from Mt. Ange
l, and eventually entered the community here. She taught biology, chemistry and physical science at Mt. Angel Academy from 1958 to 1965, followed by four years at Kennedy High School.
After receiving a Ph.D. in science education in 1972, she taught at the University of California at Fresno until she retired in 1989. She returned to Mt. Angel in 2002.
Meissner was born in Glen Ullin, N.D., and entered the Benedictine Sisters’ community in 1937, one year after her family moved to Oregon. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Marylhurst University, taught German and sewing at Mt. Angel Academy and Mt. Angel College for many years and served as the monastery seamstress for 13 years. From 1979 to 2004, she lived in Nampa, Idaho, caring for her elderly parents. She returned to Mt. Angel in 2004 and, since then, has volunteered at the St. Joseph Shelter, where she works with preschool children.
Fennimore grew up on a farm near Lone Pine, and attended a one-room schoolhouse through the 8th grade. She attended Mt. Angel Academy, and entered the Benedictine community after her junior year.
After graduation, she worked in the Sisters’ kitchen and the Mt. Angel College cafeteria. She also served as assistant prioress for nine years and coordinated the monastery infirmary for over 30 years. She also oversaw the monastery maintenance department for a number of years.
Soto is a native of Durango, Mexico. She entered a religious community in Mexico as a young woman and professed vows in 1985. She came to the Benedictine Sisters in 2003 to serve Spanish-speaking Catholics. For the past four years, she has served at St. Paul Parish in Silverton as director of religious education. She completed her transfer to Mt. Angel in 2006, making her perpetual monastic profession that year. She is currently recovering at the monastery from multiple surgeries after being severely injured in a car accident last year.

Lenten worship services each Wednesday
Immanuel Lutheran Church’s Mid-week Lenten Worship Services, “Prayer Around the Cross,” began Feb. 24 and will continue every Wednesday at 7 p.m. for five weeks, through the duration of Lent.
All are invited to attend.
“Prayer Around the Cross” is a simple format of scripture reading, prayer and singing repetitive prayer verses. The worship gathering will take place in the sanctuary at the church, located at 1036 E. Lincoln St. in Woodburn, in muted light and participants will be invited to gather around a cross and light candles while praying.
The service lasts for about 30 minutes.
Childcare will be provided for children 5 years old and younger.
This worship service was shaped by the worshipping community at the Lutheran retreat center Holden Village in Chelan, Wash.
Lent comes from an old English word meaning springtime and is understood as the springtime of the soul. The 40 days of Lent correspond to the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness and the 40 years that the Israelites spent wondering in the desert.
