Hubbard to initiate citizen patrols

Three volunteers have stepped up to do flashlight patrols, neighborhood networks to help police

HUBBARD — Three volunteers have stepped forward to lead the upcoming citizen’s patrol group in Hubbard.

The group, which is being put together by city councilor Tyler Smith, is aimed at reducing crime. It will involve things like neighborhood communications networks and evening flashlight patrols.

“The goal of the group is to sort of keep crime at a minimum in Hubbard,” said Smith.

“We are going to be serving as an extra set of eyes and ears for the police department.”

The councilor said the group will liaise with police officers to create efficient communication and enhance crime reporting.

“There will be people driving and walking around Hubbard keeping an eye out at various times of the day and night for mischief and crime,” the councilor said. “If they see things that look problematic, the police will be on speed dial.

“The police will be able to investigate.”

Smith stressed the group will not make arrests or have any law enforcement powers, but rather act for extra vigilance and reporting.

So far, three people have signed on to lead the group: Dan Estes, Glenn Holum and Linda Morley.

On March 10, the group will hold a meeting to hand out information and recruit volunteers.

It will be held at 6 p.m. at Hubbard City Hall.

Smith said anyone with an interest in the citizen’s patrol is encouraged to come.
