Woodburn shows growth, despite second loss

WOODBURN — Tennis coach Tom Lonergan can already see the benefits of Woodburn’s summer program.

Although the Bulldogs have lost two of three matches this summer, after falling 40-19 to Clackamas last week, Lonergan said the team showed a great deal of improvement over its previous loss to the same opponent.

Clackamas defeated Woodburn 40-14 in the summer opener.

Lonergan said one of the big areas that he’s seen improvement in is the focus and commitment to practice. Last year, he said very few of the players would show up for summer workouts.

This year, players are working harder in practice and even after matches are over, the Woodburn athletes stay at the tennis courts longer, playing against each other.

“Just getting them out and getting them on the court, I’ve definitely seen a boost,” said Lonergan.

Woodburn lost all five matches against Clackamas on July 6, but several could have gone either way, said Lonergan.

In boys doubles, the Woodburn team of Rodrigo Gonzales and Austin Berkey lost a tight contest, 8-7.

“They just played pretty good, pretty competitive,” said Lonergan. “They looked like they were starting to attack the net more and play more as a team.”

Also, in boys singles, Josh Summers lost a close match, 8-6.

Summers recently won the men’s 3.0 division of the 36th annual Monmouth-Independence Fourth of July tennis tournament. Summers won three straight matches in straight sets, including a 6-3, 6-1 win over Woodburn teammate Johnny Magallan in the semifinals, to take top honors.

In the July 6 match against Clackamas, the girls doubles team of Tanya Quinones and Carisma Sanchez lost 8-3 and the mixed doubles team of Azalea Martinez and Steve Morales lost 8-3. In girls singles Jodi Lonergan lost 8-0.
In an exhibition match, Ethan Berkey won 8-7.
