Woodburn gets 10 wins in 56-22 win over Crescent Valley

WOODBURN — The Woodburn wrestling team evened its Mid-Willamette Conference record at 2-2 last Thursday after defeating Crescent Valley 56-22 in what coach Cruz Urbina called a “dominating” performance by several wrestlers.

Woodburn won eight matches — six by first round pins — and another by a 17-2 tech fall.

“We wrestled well,” Urbina said. “We had several guys in the upper weights come through for us and we had a couple guys beat guys who were in the top 10 at their weights. Antonio Rodriguez (103 pounds) pinned a kid ranked in the top 10 in the first round and Michael Martinez (140) beat another top 10 kid by tech fall, 17-2.”

He said Rodriguez’s determination paid off.

“One thing about Antonio is he never gave up … he got taken down and put on his back, but he reversed it and threw (his opponent) on his back and got the pin,” Urbina said. “Michael, he just soundly dominated, from the first round on.”

Also getting victories for the Bulldogs were Jorge Saucedo (119) with a first-round pin, Omar Martinez (135) win a 5-3 decision, Joey Kalugin (145) by pinfall in the first round, Ruben Hernandez (160) by a pin in the first round, Nick Kojin (189), Adrian Mendoza (215) and RJ Bain (heavyweight), each also via first-round pins.

“I love that — getting six wins in the first round is great,” Urbina said. “It takes the wind out of their sails and gave us so much confidence.”

Hernandez recently moved up from being ranked No. 4 to No. 3 and Urbina said he’ll probably move up further, because he already has beaten the person who is ranked No. 2.
