Auxiliary unit to hand out flags at assembly
AURORA — Aurora Unit No. 110 will focus on a patriotic assembly for the second grade at North Marion Primary School Feb. 22 to honor Presidents Day this month through the National American Legion Auxiliary’s Americanism program.
Beverlee Koutny, the Americanism chairwoman, has ordered 130 small flags for the total enrollment of second graders this year, small decals from the American Legion Auxiliary.
She asked Joe Shepherd, instructor for the manufacturing class at North Marion High School, to oversee crafting the 130 small flag stands into which the flags will be inserted before delivery to the
second grade students.
Girls State applications being accepted
AURORA — Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 session of the American Legion Auxiliary Oregon Girls State to be held at Willamette University from June 20-26.
In the local area, recruitment is being coordinated in the Gervais, Woodburn and Aurora areas by Aurora Unit #110.
Girls State, a nationwide program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, is designed to increase the delegates’ awareness and knowledge of governmental processes, while learning about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Oregon Girls State provides the opportunity for high school juniors from throughout the state to learn through the development of mock governments at the county and state levels. Experiences may include public speaking while campaigning for various public offices, drafting and presenting bills for passage in the Girls State legislature, serving as a lobbyist to help influence decision-making, participating in mock trials and a wide variety of workshops and hearing presentations by some of Oregon’s highest elected officials and other inspirational speakers.
For more information about the eligibility of current high school juniors who are willing to salute the American flag, contact Ann M. Barrie, Aurora Girls State Chairman, at 503-981-0583.
