MT. ANGEL — Five Kennedy football players received all-state recognition for their performances this past season in guiding the Trojans to the Class 2A state championship game.

Seniors Derek Barth and Nick Theimer received the team’s top honors, as both were first-team selections on both sides of the ball.

Barth was the team’s most explosive offensive weapon at running back, racking up 1,864 yards on the ground, to go along with 37 total touchdowns. He closed out the season with an 11-game streak of scoring at least one touchdown, and scored touchdowns in 13 of the Trojans’ 14 games. His six-touchdown, 268-yard performance against Regis on Sept. 25, 2009 marked one of the most prolific games in Kennedy history.

He was also the team’s top receiver, with 23 catches for 404 yards.

Barth’s 83 yards rushing led the Trojans in their 14-7 loss to Scio in the state championship game. He was also a first-team selection at defensive back, where he made four interceptions during the year.

Theimer was a first-team offensive lineman and linebacker. He was one of the key figures of the stout Kennedy defense, which held opponents to 14 points or less in 11 of 14 games during the season.

Theimer’s 22 tackles in the state championship game led the Trojans. For the season, he was the team’s leading tackler by far, with 122.

He was also invited to play in the annual Shrine Game, which pits the top Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A football players in the state against each other in an east versus west all-star game.

Theimer will compete for the East team, and play against other local athletes, including St. Paul’s Ryan Pierson and North Marion’s Jordan McCain, who will compete for the West squad.

Barth was also selected as an alternate for the Shrine Game.

Also earning all-state honors for the Trojans were senior Justin Humphreys, who was a second-team linebacker, and junior Nikitta Sharabarin, who was a second-team punter.
Junior Dillon Barth was also an honorable mention as a defensive lineman.

After placing second in the Tri-River Conference, the Trojans finished out the 2009 season with an overall record of 9-5.
