Salem man stabbed in Gervais

GERVAIS — A Salem man was stabbed during an exchange in downtown Gervais last week.

According to Gervais police, the victim, an adult Hispanic male, was approached by three men walking on the street just before midnight last Wednesday.

He was stabbed during the assault, on North Fourth Street and Douglas Avenue, and contacted a friend for help.

His friend transported him to Silverton Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was later released.

Gervais Police Chief Peter Spirup said incidents like this are “not common” in Gervais.

“We’re concerned when this type of thing happens in the community,” said Spirup. “We’re always interested in receiving input of information. ... Anything is important. Don’t assume that something you know might not be important.

“If anybody’s seen anything or seen anybody that night — if they saw three individuals walking in Gervais that night and they can provide that information, that might be helpful.”

The suspects are all adult Hispanic males. The first is described as having darker skin, 19 to 20 years old, 5-foot-8 to 5-9, thin build, wearing dark clothing. This individual was fluent in English.

The other two were lighter skinned, one about 5-10 to 5-11, the other 5-5 to 5-6, 19 to 20 years old. Both were wearing dark clothing.

The victim’s name and other details are being withheld pending investigation. He is expected to fully recover, police said.

The Gervais Police Department has asked anyone with information to call 503-792-4575.

“It’s just an unfortunate incident,” said Spirup. “And we’re fortunate it wasn’t worse. That’s what you worry about — is that it could have been worse.”
