ESTACADA — In the first of back-to-back tests to determine the Capital Conference dual championship, the North Marion wrestling team was up to task.
The Huskies earned crucial victories at several key positions in the lineup to score a 44-30 victory over Estacada on Thursday at Estacada High School.
With the win, North Marion (3-0 Capital) sets up a showdown with Cascade (3-0) on Thursday at home for the conference dual championship.
“It’ll obviously decide the league dual champions because the two teams are 3-0 at this point,” coach Mike Robinson said. “And that’s going to have a lot of bearing on the league championship and the district as well.”
Robinson said he knew last Th
ursday’s match would come down to the 135- and 140-pound matches with senior Fortino Sanchez and sophomore Nick Kamis.
Sanchez, who was down 10-1 after two rounds and 14-6 in the third, scored a surprising pinfall over John Weaver at 135 to give North Marion a 26-12 lead.
It avenged an earlier loss to Weaver during the Pac-Rim tournament in Seaside last month, which saw Weaver beat Sanchez, 8-7.
At 140, Kamis pinned Sean Warner to increase the lead to 32-12.
“That really turned around the dual for us,” Robinson said. “Those two we figured the match would be decided on, and we won both of them so at 135, 140, really good jobs by Sanchez and Kamis.”
Senior Cody Randall scored a forfeit at 145 to give the Huskies a 38-12 lead with five matches remaining.
But Estacada could not gain ground in the team score as it earned two decisions and two falls over the final five matches.
Sophomore Gary Card sealed the victory for North Marion with a fall at 215.
Other victories for the Huskies included senior Michael Torres by forfeit at 285; sophomore Jake Stigall over Spencer Bradford by 15-6 major decision at 119; freshman Lucas Randall over Shane Licari by 14-3 major decision at 125; and junior Tyler Stigall by forfeit at 130.
Huskies win at Toledo: North Marion won its sixth tournament this season, winning the 14-team Toledo tournament on Saturday at Toledo High School.
The Huskies scored 231.5 points, and Dayton was runner-up with 172.5.
North Marion had four individual champions, including Lucas Randall (125), Cody Randall (145), Nick Kamis (140) and Blake Dunham (171).
Other placings for the Huskies include Sarafin Sanchez (second, 119), Card (third, 215), Fortino Sanchez (third, 135), Spencer Christie (third, 145), Travis Ohge (third, 140), Zack Packham (fourth, 152) and D.J. Falcon (fifth, 145).
