AURORA — Aurora garbage collection rates will increase 4 percent starting in February 2010.

The Aurora City Council granted the rate hike requested by Allied Waste of Marion County at its Nov. 10 meeting.

Robin Murbach, general manager, said Allied’s costs, including health insurance and yard waste processing fees, had outpaced inflation since the last rate increase, 2 percent, on Aug. 1, 2008.

The council approved the increase by a 4-1 vote with Counselor Terry Roberts casting the dissenting vote.

“It’s truly the wrong time,” Roberts said. She had not heard from any residents who had received pay raises.

Councilor Greg Taylor asked if the increase could be implemented in steps. That  would not be practical since it was a small amount, Murbach said.

Customers using 20 gallon carts will pay $21.10 a month, an increase of 19 cents; 35 gallons carts, $23.60, a 13 cent increase; 65 gallon carts, $26.50, a 23 cent increase; and 90 gallon carts, $31.20, a 28 cent increase.

Customers using 20-gallon carts with no recycling or yard waste service will pay $15 a month, a 13 cent increase.

City Attorney Dennis Koho presented City Recorder Laurie Boy with the  CMC (certified municipal clerk) designation she had earned through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Inc.

Council also approved hiring Lango Hansen Landscape Architects of Portland to provide design and planning assistance for Aurora City Park and a proposed new park.
