City hires two key positions

WOODBURN — The city of Woodburn has announced decisions on two key positions for hire.

Ignacio Palacios, who lives in Hubbard, has been named the city’s top pick for its new finance director.

Christina Shearar, of Sherwood, is the top selection for city recorder, to take over for Mary Tennant beginning Dec. 1.

City Administrator Scott Derickson said the hiring was an “extensive process” that included advertising, community and department head interviews, and one-on-one sit-down interviews.

“The quality of our applicants really exceeded my expectations on when we entered this process, absolutely,” said Derickson.

“So it was very competitive. We were really faced with a difficult decision to make for both of those positions, given the quality of applicants that we had.

“It’s probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in hiring in some time.”

He extended formal offers to the candidates on Tuesday, but stressed nothing is definite until city council approves the selections. That decision will take place Monday evening, Nov. 9.

“It’s not a done deal until the council’s done with it,” said Derickson. “The final step is council approval.”
