Woodburn hosting girls basketball clinics

During May, members of the Woodburn High School girls basketball program and head coach Dan Boyd are hosting a series of girls basketball clinics for area girls currently in grades six through eight.

The clinics will focus on teaching ball handling and shooting fundamentals. All girls in grades six through eight, who are interested in developing skills to become a more competitive basketball player, are encouraged to attend.

Clinics will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Woodburn High School gym. Clinic dates are May 6, 8, 12, 13, 15, 19 and 22.

There is no cost to attend.

WAYGA seeks mentors

The Senior Estates Golf and Country Club Board of Directors has approved a junior golf mentor program to be conducted during the summer months at Senior Estates.

Men and women golf members of Senior Estates are needed to act as mentors for a nine-hole round of golf for a boy or a girl between the ages of 10 and 17.

One mentor and one junior golfer will play nine holes of golf together, with the mentor helping with issues of score-keeping, golf etiquette, rules and shot-making.

Junior players who participate in the program will have to demonstrate knowledge of the game and be approved by a golf professional, or will have successfully completed a Woodburn Area Youth Golf Association (WAYGA) or First Tee program in order to participate in the mentor program.

The Senior Estates pro shop will assign mentors to kids who wish to participate. Greens fees of $5 have been approved for the youngsters and will be paid by the youths or WAYGA.

Sign up with Bill or Janet in the Senior Estates pro shop to volunteer as a mentor. It will be up to the mentors to maintain pace of play and only one mentor-junior two-some or four-some will be allowed on the course at one time.
