EUGENE - On April 16, in Corvallis, Woodburn freshman Max Zemstov ran the 3,000 meters for the first time this season. Although his time of 10 minutes, 30.19 seconds wasn't the best at the meet, it put him among the best freshmen distance runners in the state, and qualified him for the Oregon Relays (previously known as the XO Invitational) and a chance to run in the footsteps of Oregon legends.

Saturday, Zemstov competed in the Oregon Relays, held at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon, where 50 schools from Oregon, Washington and Nevada were represented.

He placed ninth in the freshman 3,000, with a time of 10:13.84 - 17 seconds better than his previous personal record.

"It was a very select group of kids who were in the race," said Woodburn coach Cameron Turner. "He had some ankle trouble, so I think that hampered him a little, but overall it was a good experience for him and the kids that went and watched him.

"We had three kids go, just to watch, and they had never been down there. It got them pumped to see Hayward Field and see where the Olympic Trials are going to be held."

Zemstov is currently the fastest freshman in the 1,500 in the Mid-Willamette Conference and the third-fastest freshman in the 3,000.
