WOODBURN -- The Les Schwab Tires Challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series wrapped up today with Brandon Johnson and John Weaver making trips to the winner's circle. Johnson, the No. 1 qualifier, faced off with division point's leader and defending Northwest Division Champion Steve Federlin in the Top Alcohol Dragster final taking the win in 5.640 seconds at 254.88 mph. Federlin of Oregon City, was not far behind running 5.620 seconds, 254.30 mph. Weaver, of New Port Beach, Calif., ran away from Brian Hough in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final posting a run of 5.982 seconds at 243.83 mph for his second win of the year. The Junction City racer, Hough suffered mechanical problems right off the start but the runner-up finish will break a three-way tie and move Hough into the Northwest Division Funny Car point's lead. Jeff Lane extended his points lead over the Comp Eliminator field with his third win of the year running 8.093 seconds at 159.48 mph over Dennis Myers. Lane also led the Northwest Division Stock Eliminator points coming into this weekend's event. Dustan Hentges took the win in Top Comp when Quentin Chambers left early with a red light giving the win to Hentges of Olympia, Wash. Hentges went on to post a time of 7.347 seconds at 184.69 mph. Thomas Bayer capped all the champions grabbing wins in both Super Comp and in Super Gas. The Lucas Oil Sponsored Bayer used a hole-shot starting line advantage to hold off Ryan Giacone in Super Gas running 9.967 seconds to Giacone's 9.958 seconds then out ran Violet Larson in Super Comp with a run of 8.924 seconds at 168.95 mph. Former National Champion Jimmy DeFrank returned to the winner's circle in Super Stock with a 9.152 second win over Mark Faul and Jim Waldo won in Stock Eliminator over Tommy Gaynor. Hal Vandermeer held on to win the Super Street title over Ryan Giacone running 10.896 seconds at 112.40 mph. Anita Cunningham came back from a crash last month in Mission, B.C. to take the win in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson. The Bellingham, Wash., resident clocked in at 9.424 seconds at 138.86 mph on her '90 Suzuki. Northwest Division racers head to Yellowstone Dragstrip in Acton, Mont., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 18-20.
