Mary Samuel has a proud legacy — six generations.
She now lives at Heritage House in Woodburn, suffering from Alzheimer’s, but spent many active years raising her family and selling Avon. She is 93 years old.
Mary was born on Jan. 12, 1914 in Portland. She was raised on a farm and attended school in St. Helens. She had three brothers and helped her mother with household chores.
Her brother Louis introduced Mary to her future husband, Archie Clarence Samuel. They were married in 1931 during the Great Depression and rented their first house for about $10 a month. Mary followed her husband’s logging jobs from Vernonia, Rose Lodge, Elsie, Nehalem, Manzanita, Wheeler, Hillsboro and Woodburn.
In between, Mary was mostly a stay-at-home mother, but had worked as a bookkeeper and Avon lady for 25 years.
She received many awards for her Avon sales. She loved to entertain family and friends, play cards and bake homemade pies and cookies.
Her apple pie was even written about in the Statesman Journal when the county commissioners raved about her fabulous pie.
She was always busy yet found time to crochet beautiful tablecloths, doilies and afghans. Her elementary teacher taught her to crochet when she was 9 years old.
Also, one of her favorite hobbies was cutting out recipes to try from the weekly Oregonian’s Food Day section. She loved to watch “Days of our Lives” as well as “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.” She didn’t miss “Matlock” either and adored Andy Griffin.
“She was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and intelligence,” said her daughter Gloria. “She was a wiz at working crossword puzzles.”
Mary and Archie had four daughters, Gloria, Florence, Diane and Nancy.
“Everyday we celebrate her spirit and her gracious life,” said Stevenson.
