* Where are you from?

I was born in Mankato, Minnesota.

* What do you love about your job?

I get to work with bright students.

* What are your hobbies?

I like puzzles, basketball, soccer, reading and writing.

* Where did you go to school?

Mankato West High School (Mankato, Minn.) and Stanford University

* What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

Either skydiving, or bungee jumping or swimming in a river with piranha.

* How long have you been working in schools?

I taught in Palo Alto, Calif., in 1981-82, and in Hawaii from 1983-87, then in Maryland in 1988-89, then I took a year off to travel around the world, then I taught in Portland from 89-90, then was back in Hawaii from 1990-91, then Maryland again from 91-93, then Washington from 93-97, then Illinois from 97-98, then I have worked and taught in Oregon from 98-now, starting in Woodburn in 99.

* Why did you decide to work in schools?

I found that I was good at it (helping friends and such) and I have always enjoyed it. It involves ideas, people, a chance to make a difference, great vacations, and the opportunity to work with good people. Teachers are apt to be good people and high school students are a treat to be around.

* Do you have a favorite quote?

"It's smarter to be lucky than it's lucky to be smart."

* Do you have any hidden talents?

Why would I hide a talent? Teaching calls upon every skill I can muster.
