| CCLR's first week a good one |

Chemeketa Center for Learning in Retirement has started fall classes. Last Monday the ground work for the "Crusades" class was introduced by former Marine and Hubbard Mayor Ron LaFollette.
"Those present enjoyed the lecture very much," said Beverlee Koutny, program coordinator. "Ron has a way of bringing history to life."
The current events class always manages to find lots of interesting topics to discuss and with the coming election, there should be no end to issues and topics this fall.
Mah Jongg is moving along on Tuesdays and the group is always open to new players.
Thursday the class in "Visiting Local Businesses" was pleasantly surprised to visit with Ron Monnier at his Fushia nursery off Crosby Road. He has accumulated about 1200 varieties in a very short time and his nursery is open to the public.
"He gave the group a live lecture on the care and feeding of these exotic flowers and everyone received a small can of Woodburn Fertilizer to use at home," Koutny said. "Ron has been featured on several TV garden shows and one that will be broadcast on OPB this winter."
Next Thursday morning the class will be visiting the Woodburn Fertilizer plant in downtown Woodburn to see what is being produced next door to the Chemeketa Campus.
The Marion Berry Payers are getting ready for some up and coming performances and they look forward to your requests for programs. Skits are being tried with the aim of entertaining both seniors and others in the community. They are always looking for "wannabee" stars. Fall term has started and Winter term is in the works.
A men only cooking class is being proposed and it needs students as well as volunteers to demonstrate a favorite food. If you have an hour or so to share your talents, this group would be much appreciative. A good hour for this class might be about 4 p.m., but this is open to suggestion. |
