Woodburn Independent interviews Kevin Mannix
At look at the candidate for the 5th Congressional District

Kevin Mannix

Woodburn Independent: Illegal immigration is a controversial issue in Oregon and nationwide. What are you going to do to try and fix the problem?

Kevin Mannix: We must secure our borders through all necessary means.

Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to cut in front of those who are legal and awaiting citizenship.

Immigrants who enter the U.S. on a temporary basis to work should be required to return to their own country within a specified period of time. Government benefits should only be available to citizens and legal residents.

WI: How are you going to help fix the health care crisis in Oregon?

KM: We need to simplify health plans to make them more affordable for businesses and individuals. We should allow tax deductibility of individual health insurance premiums to make them more affordable and portable.

WI: How would you approach encouraging the development, and use, of biofuels?

KM: Cautiously. This is driving up the cost of food. We need to be looking at all options: encourage conservation, increase availability of oil, develop a range of alternative energy sources and use combined U.S. purchasing power to reduce oil prices.

WI: The No. 1 infrastructure issue facing the Mid-Willamette Valley is the I-5 interchange at Woodburn. How will you help your district's highway and infrastructure needs? How will you help Woodburn?

KM: The federal government must invest in repair and expansion of our aging highways.

It not only has an economic impact (getting to work and getting goods to market) but has a security impact as well.

There are creative ways to partner with defense spending bills to get money for infrastructure. Congress should enhance transportation funding with general revenues.

WI: Energy costs are rising, partly due to sea lions at the Bonneville Dam and Lower Columbia. Do you support the removal of these sea lions?

KM: Yes, absolutely. Congress should reform laws which allow courts to stop or slow common-sense solutions.

WI: What are your feelings on the No Child Left Behind Act and is it working? If yes, why? If no, what changes should be made?

KM: It is not working. The federal government should not be managing local education. We need to keep education in the hands of parents and local communities. Federal grants should be limited to specific needs and not to drive education policy.

WI: Why should Oregonians vote for you over your primary opponent?

KM: I have years of private business experience combined with many years of public service, helping constituents and reforming government.

I know how to work across party lines for the public good, and I have a proven track record of solid policy positions and the capability to get results.

Go to top.
