Woodburn firefighters poke around for hot spots after the fire at French Prairie Middle School was under control Wednesday evening.

Efforts to provide special cinnamon rolls on Wednesday led to the early detection of an arson fire in the joint Maintenance/Food Services building, 20 yards to the west of French Prairie Middle School

"It could have been a lot worse," said Woodburn School District's Kim Dennis. "We had a crew from food preparation working late Wednesday night preparing 1,740 cinnamon rolls for 'Teacher Appreciation Day' on Thursday."

The fire was under control within 20 minutes and five kids, aged 12 to 14 were seen running from the area before the fire was reported.

Both the Woodburn Fire District and the Woodburn Police Department are investigating. The fire is considered suspicious and anyone with information is asked to call the WPD at 503-982-2345 or the WFD at 503-982-2360.

More on this story will be in Saturday's Woodburn Independent.
