Soccer's impact in Europe something Americans could learn from To the editor: I just read the World Cup article by Jason. Good, perfectly honest, and probably a very accurate description of U.S. soccer. But, I have to disagree with the statement that the U.S. has never won on European soil. Okay, maybe never a Cup game, but we have won over here. I attended the U.S. vs Poland "friendly" World Cup tune-up game right here in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Being stationed in Europe, especially Germany, has some really cool benefits. I'm not much of a soccer fan, but I'm a huge fan of sport in general. I can tell you that after being stationed around the world for over 13 years the U.S. could really learn something from what the World Cup brings. This event this year has really shown me how the world views soccer. This entire country of Germany is celebrating -- all at once. Pretty amazing. My backyard neighbors have a big tent set up with a big screen TV and I hear them cheering and hollering all evening -- every day. Not just when Germany is playing, but for whoever is playing. It's pretty cool to see it all going on. Baseball is "America's sport," but you can go to many places in the States during the World Series and find all kinds of people who have no clue who's even playing. Not here. Everyone displays German flags, colors, anything and everything to support their team. It's pretty cool and has been a great experience to see first-hand. Oh yeah, we won that game versus Poland 1-nil, in a snowstorm. Ben Ernst Spangdahlem Air Base Spangdahlem, Germany Baker, paper get kudos for Relay for Life coverage To the editor: I have to thank John Baker for his coverage of the Relay for Life last weekend in Woodburn. John continues to make the event seem fresh and interesting each year, and covers the Relay in such a way as to give it the importance I, and many others, think it deserves. I know John is the editor and he is a busy man, but the photos and story in Wednesday's paper was an uplifting finish to a record-breaking Relay for Life. The Relay is lucky to have John take such an interest in it, and Woodburn is lucky to have someone of John's integrity and talent leading the newspaper. Candice Spaulding Woodburn Wieneke gets a thumbs up for House District 22 seat To the editor: I met Carl Wieneke two years ago and was immediately impressed with his qualifications. It is very rare to have a political candidate with the experience, knowledge and instinct for the job. We have such a candidate in Carl Wieneke, who is running for State Representative in House District 22. As quality assurance manager for the State of Oregon, Carl worked to save millions of dollars in waste. Thanks to Carl's tireless work, there was more money for schools, public safety and health care. As a manager at a truck manufacturing plant, Carl brought management and labor together to promote efficiency and quality. Carl will have a similar approach as State Representative. He will work to keep spending in check, but more importantly, he will work to improve quality in state government. Please join me in supporting Carl Wieneke. Al Shannon Brooks |
