Soul's Harbor Nazarene Church
A person was recently given a Bible, and asked if the words of Jesus were in red letters so that they could be easily sorted out. A real danger, not only these days, but since the beginning of Christianity, is to "sort out" the words of Jesus and then try to use them as a basis for living our lives. But by taking His words out of the historical context in which He spoke them, we can easily end up with instructions far different from what He would give us in our particular situation.
A really good example is when Jesus told a young man, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." (Matthew 19:21 NIV) Taken out of its context, this verse has been used to persuade people that unless they give everything they own to the poor, they aren't really following Jesus. But when you read the whole story (which starts at 19:16 and goes all the way to 19:30), you realize that, in this person's case, his wealth had actually become his source of stability. It had become more important than God. So Jesus was challenging him to give up his false god and get back to relying on the true God.
Our services are at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays, with an adult Bible Study (Revelation) and youth group at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

What did life throw at you this week? How did you handle the challenges that unfolded? Did you let yourself enjoy the good things that also came your way? Each day presents a little bit of each; challenges and blessings.
On this journey we call life, we can look at it from so many angles and each of us has our own angle to view it from and way of dealing with things. Our personal experiences combine to build our own take on it all. Lets allow these different "takes" each of us has without judgement. We don't have to agree or even like a particular persons ideas and we certainly don't have to "be a part of it" if it compromises our own or accept the extremes that cause harm to others (that is a whole other matter). But we need to remember, being human, we are limited. God is not limited and he can see each and every one of us to our very core. Is there even one of us that has the deep insight required to rightly judge others? And ourselves, many of us judge ourselves more harshly than we do others. We don't know ourselves like God knows us either. We can be so hard on ourselves and beat ourselves up without mercy. Remember God's grace. Accept it as your own. He means it for each and every one of us and He means for us to share it, without judgement.
Please note: There will be a single service at 10 a.m. July 30. Also, the contemporary service is suspended until Sept. 10, and then will start at its new time of 5 p.m. The traditional service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 6. Childcare is available for infants and children through first grade. during both services. Come and join us! All are welcome!
Hope Lutheran Church
God can accomplish great things with meager resources and humble beginnings. The smallest seeds grow into a plant large enough to shelter birds and provide abundant shade. Communities of faith begin with a few, then grow to sheltering homes for many. Claimed in Baptism, shaped by the Scriptures, and nourished with the Lord's Supper, the people of God extend the branches of Christ's tree of life to all.
Our Vacation Bible School for children is from July 24 to 28. If you have children who would like to attend, please call our church office at 503-981-0400. Sunday services: English Adult Bible Class 9:15 a.m., English worship 10:30 a.m., Spanish Language Bible Class in the Fellowship Hall

He and his wife have been members of St. Edward for the past 20 years.
