CORVALLIS — The North Marion boys basketball team was down but not out, after suffering a 63-37 loss to No. 3 Central on Thursday night in the Class 4A quarterfinals at Gill Coliseum. Despite the 26-point margin of defeat, coach Tony Merrill said the important thing is for the Huskies to put that loss behind them, now facing a consolation game with Newport on Friday at 10:45 a.

WOODBURN — For the second consecutive season, Mid-Willamette Conference coaches were in agreement: Andy Avgi was the best player in the league. Despite placing fourth in the conference and missing the state playoffs for the first time since 2006, Avgi was named player of the year, after leading the league in scoring and rebounding.

WOODBURN — The truth is, Jacob Bonham doesn’t really enjoy swimming. The Woodburn junior was part of the relay teams which qualified for two events at the Class 5A state swim meet, and broke school records six times during the course of the season.

CRANE — When David Doman first became a teacher and coach at Crane High School, there wasn’t much of a wrestling culture in place. The community support and understanding paled in comparison to that of Woodburn High School, where Doman graduated in 1992.

PORTLAND — Smiles beamed and for one weekend, North Marion was considered among one of the state’s elite wrestling programs. Behind two state champions, one finalist and two third-placers, the Huskies took third place at the OSAA Class 4A state wrestling championships Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum.
