Fanning the flames

In addition to bringing in firefighters and equipment from other jurisdictions — including from the Mount Angel Fire District — some impressive resources were employed to knock out the Elk Fire near Madras. On Monday, airplanes were making retardant drops to try to stop the blaze, which eventually grew to about 1,000 acres.
