Randall, Patterson pace Husky grapplers

ALBANY — The North Marion wrestling team began 2013 by winning three of its five duals Jan. 5 at the West Albany Invitational. The Huskies dominated Willamette 54-9, clobbered Stayton 57-18 and defeated Central Linn 51-30, losing to Class 6A powers Sprague and Thurston.

STAYTON — For a half it appeared the Kennedy boys basketball team was going to battle Regis to the wire. The Trojans hung tough, trailing 10-7 after the first quarter and took the lead in the second quarter on a 3-pointer from Kasey Perez and another jumper from Doug Pomeroy, 18-15 with 3:15 left in the half.


Lady Cats’ five-game win streak snapped

GERVAIS — The Gervais Lady Cats ran into a buzzsaw in basketball action on Jan. 3, falling to the Vernonia Loggers by a final score of 51-43. The game was played at Gervais High School, and despite playing on their home court, the Lady Cats (8-3) struggled with the Loggers (5-3) from the outset.

ST. PAUL — The St. Paul girls basketball team continues to make progress, which is what coach Mike Murphy likes to see. The Lady Bucks went 3-0 last week with Casco League victories over Country Christian on Tuesday and Willamette Valley Christian on Friday, followed by a nonleague win over Dufur on the road Saturday.
