COTTAGE GROVE — One player doesn’t win or lose a game, but when your best player goes down it will have an impact. That is what St. Paul had to deal with Saturday in the Class 1A football state championship game against Camas Valley, which the Bucks lost 24-8, when Cole Weisz, the Casco League offensive and defensive player of the year, went down with an ankle injury with a little over six minutes left in the third quarter.

WOODBURN — It’s early December, and that means it’s time to get rolling into high gear with the high school basketball season.
The Woodburn Bulldogs boys basketball team has several key players returning this year, including four seniors in Martin Ray, Julian Veliz, Zack Husko and Misael Equiluea, and a pair of juniors, Rey Ruiz and Dimitry Cherimnov.

Head Coach Gilmer Miller said the Cougars have a number of key athletes returning — 11 in all — including two seniors who are expected to provide a high level of experience to the team this season.

Jonathan “Dusty” Price, who is in his third year of teaching social studies at Wellness, Business and Sports School, comes to the helm of the team with many years of wrestling experience himself, having wrestled while attending Canby High School.

MOUNT ANGEL — It was a wire-to-wire win for the Kennedy High School boys basketball team over Gervais High School last Wednesday evening. The Trojans jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Gervais Cougars and never trailed in the game, winning easily by a final score of 49-33.

On the evening of Dec. 5, the Gervais Lady Cats and the Kennedy High School Trojans went back and forth for the full 32 minutes, but neither team could pull away in a battle of two evenly-matched squads.

AURORA — North Marion girls basketball coach Dennis Melcher said pressure defense will be the key to North Marion’s success this year. Against Roosevelt on Friday the team turned his philosophy into execution and came away with a 59-42 victory to improve to 1-2 on the year.

SALEM — The Woodburn girls basketball team put together its best game of the year Friday at Sprague High School in Salem, beating the Olympians 66-16.
Woodburn led 20-3 at the end of the first quarter and led 25-3 with 2:16 left in the second quarter before Sprague scored its first field goal of the game.
